Summary: Monday through Thursday Homework

4th/5th grade students will have homework Monday - Thursday

Nightly Homework:

  • Reading a chapter book for 30 minutes
  • Writing a summary paragraph of the nightly reading (4-6 sentences)
  • Math practice work sheet or problems off the board

In some cases, students will need to catch up or finish asssignments over the weekend.  This is usually because the student needed quite a bit more time than everyone else in the class, or because he or she was not using their class time wisely.

In other cases, students will be notified of upcoming writing assignments on Friday, so that students may get a head start on larger assignments over the weekend if they wish.

Homework is Important Because . . .

  • Studies have shown that at this age, students must read for  1 - 1.5 hours every day in order to improve their skills.
  •  I make every effort to provide an hour a day of reading in class, but considering the fact that we must study: writing, spelling, speaking, science, social studies, math, geography, grammar, music, art, pe, and social skills (like the state mandated "Too Good For Drugs" program), it is important that students take the responsibility for some of their practice and do it at home.
  • Summarizing what you have read is an excellent way to build reading comprehension while practicing basic writing skills.
  • Students need continuous practice  and review of  all of the math skills they have learned up to this point in order to keep their math brain in shape as well as make computation  and use of algorithms automatic.

Homework is not meant to be overwhelming or frustrating.  We have tried to give the minimum amount, while insuring that students are getting the necessary practice doing independent skill building.
